What is Botox ® Cosmetic?

Botox ® Cosmetic (botulinum toxin) is approved by the FDA as a safe and effective treatment for frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead wrinkles.  It has been used therapeutically for over 16 years to treat a variety of medical conditions.  It has been approved in more than 75 countries.

Answers to common questions about Botox ® Cosmetic

What is Botox ® Cosmetic used for?

It is a purified protein administered in a simple, nonsurgical procedure that temporarily improves the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead wrinkles.

What causes lines between the brows and on my forehead?

The lines that appear between your brows and on your forehead actually result from muscle movement over a period of time.  As your skin becomes less elastic over time, repeated frowning can result in those moderate to severe lines between your brows and on your forehead.

What are the side effects?

The most common side effects following injection(s) may include temporary bleeding/bruising, swelling, tenderness, redness, drooping of the eyebrow or eyelid (although rare) and nausea.   Side effects vary with each individual.

How does Botox ® Cosmetic work?

Botox blocks impulses from the nerves to the tiny facial muscles causing the fine lines or wrinkles.  The muscles relax and the overlying skin remains smooth and unwrinkled, while the untreated facial muscles contract in a normal fashion allowing your normal facial expression to remain the same.

What is the treatment like?

Botox is a quick and minimally invasive procedure.  Dr. Bruner will determine exactly where to administer the injections to achieve the best results.  No anesthesia in required, although she may choose to numb the area with a cold pack or anesthetic cream prior to injecting.  Dr. Bruner will then administer a few tiny injections into the muscles that cause you to frown or have wrinkles.

The entire procedure takes approximately 15 minutes.  Discomfort is minimal and brief.  There is no downtime afterward.

How soon will I see results?

You can expect to see results with 3 to 7 days after injection and can last up to four months.  Your own results may vary.  Be sure to talk to Dr. Bruner about what you can expect.

I hear that Botox ® Cosmetic can treat my excessive sweating?

Yes.  Hyperhidrosis is excessive perspiration (sweating) or sweating beyond what is necessary to maintain normal body temperature.  Botox injections made into the sweat-producing areas of the armpits can effectively reduce sweat production for many months.

Have patients been happy with their results?

Yes!  According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), Botox ® Cosmetic was the most popular physician-administered cosmetic procedure in the United States.  For additional information, please visit BotoxCosmetic.com
